A Pop Story

Subdivisions. Palm Trees. Superblocks. Fashion. Traffic jams. Strip malls. Urban blight. Isolation. Raw Emotion. Dreams. Talent. Plastic Facades. Los Angeles was the only city that Pop Physique could be born in. As much as the world hates LA, the world wants to be LA. In the post modern, post capitalist American era Pop Physique began as more of an art project than business endeavor. Pop Physique was created by Jennifer Williams, a former professional ballet dancer and Pilates Instructor and her husband Deric, a brand developer.

Jennifer studied ballet at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, where she was awarded the Corbett-Mayerson Scholarship. She danced professionally with Cincinnati Ballet, Dayton Ballet, Ballet Met, Sacramento Ballet, as well as guest artist roles in San Francisco. After having children she became certified in Pilates and taught in San Francisco for 7 years.  She also taught ballet to advanced level dancers. Jennifer discovered the Lotte Berk system and was so impressed with the results that she wanted to bring the methodology to more people and channel the original artistic environment of its creator.

Pop Physique #1 opened November 2008, created by the husband wife team of Jennifer and Deric Williams in the Creative Class enclave of Silver Lake. The tension between artistic innovation and gentrification: The Silver Lake #yupster diaspora was the ultimate influence on the style and aesthetics of what Pop Physique created. For one hour, women joined together to create the escape. One hour away from the chaos and the corporate noise of the modern world, one hour to focus on themselves, one hour to sculpt and tone together.

In 2010, Pop Physique opened a second location in Studio City and its third location in Mar Vista on the Westside of Los Angeles.
Pop Physique’s Fitness system integrates our signature one hour group exercise class ‘Pop Sculpt,’ brilliant marketing, and subtle #consumer touch points to create a total artistic product integration.
Pop Physique’s  populist message soon became the most popular LA based boutique fitness brand.

By 2012, Pop Physique had opened 15  locations including prime urban markets such as San Francisco as well as introducing Pop Physique DVD’s.
